REASONS FOR A HANDICAP

A handicap makes the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling golfers of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis.  A basic premise underlies the USGA (United States Golf Association) Handicap System, namely that every player will try to make the best score she can at each hole in every round she plays, regardless of where the round is played, and that she will post every acceptable round for peer review.  Also, individual handicaps will allow the Pairings Committee to pair individuals for league play.

Furthermore, you must have an established handicap in order to receive awards or prizes, and it must appear on our current AWGA  Handicap Report.  If you are a new golfer and do not have an established handicap, you can acquire a “trend handicap” by playing and posting just (5) nine-hole rounds of golf.  These rounds can be played on Tuesdays or any other day you play

EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL (ESC)

Equitable Stroke Control is the downward adjustment of individual hole-scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a player’s potential ability.  ESC sets a maximum number a player can post on any hole depending on the players Course Handicap.  See the table below to determine your ESC.

NOTE:  The chart will be on the back of your weekly pre-printed league scorecard.

Your ACTUAL SCORE per hole, and your ACTUAL TOTAL SCORE will be used to determine winners of games.  Remember, if you pick up your ball on any hole, you are not eligible for awards or prizes.  The Handicap Committee will enter the ESC TOTAL SCORE into the Handicap System, NOT your actual score.

HOW TO ENTER SCORE ON SCORECARD

As an example, if your handicap is between 10-14, the maximum you can take on any hole is 8, whether it is a par 3, par 4, or par 5.  See chart above.

IF YOU ARE DELAYING SPEED-OF-PLAY, you must pick up your ball when you have reached 10 strokes.  The score for that hole would be entered as:    /10

IF YOU ARE NOT DELAYING SPEED-OF-PLAY, and you elect to play out the hole and get a 9, the score for that hole would be entered as:    9/8

NOTE: 9 is your actual score and 8 is your ESC.  Your ESC will be entered into the Handicap System.

IF YOU ENTERED ANY ESC’S ON THE SCORECARD, you must have an entry in the ESC column on the scorecard.

We are a sanctioned member of the Arizona Women’s Golf Association and are REQUIRED to follow all rules of golf and that includes scoring accuracy.  When playing in a league to make the day enjoyable for everyone, we must enforce all rules of golf.  We are a fun group, but that does not mean that we are on the golf course for a good time and do not have to be concerned with the rules of the game.
